Thy Word is a lamp unto my feet and a light unto my path.
What is the worst disaster you could imagine happening – an earthquake, a tornado, a war? What if God said He was going to punish mankind for their sins and the punishment He spoke of was unbearable? Sadly, this is how the book of Amos ends, with a punishment like no other. For in the book of Amos God promised a famine like no other; not a famine of water or food, but a famine of God’s word. And guess what came after the fall of Israel? 400 years of silence from Heaven. 400 years without God’s voice. 400 years of famine in the land.
As we look one more time into the book of Amos, let us consider what it would be like if we did not have God’s word, and let us always hide that Word in our hearts, so that we never face the famine that came to the people of God long ago.
